Hyperspace Outlaw is a game about the paleolithic internet age.
Oh is it called Hypnospace Outlaw? Cool, why tho? Alright alright, I'll change it never. The point is this game has me thinking that the video game industry is a perfect example of why no one should live forever.
The problem with eternal life is apathy. Straight up. Ever since video games went online game companies have gone further and further down the downloadable content rabbit hole. At first, it was like, "This is dope, we can fix bugs after the game has launched." Then it was like, " This is cool, we can add more content after the game has launched."
Now it's like, "We are going to make a game and reactively fix issues as players find them, cut the game into pieces and charge players later on purpose with post-launch DLC, monetize while in the game, have a robust multiplayer that is separate from the story of the game because people expect that and we will have no discernable timeline where we will stop working on all of this stuff and the game will just, like, live forever."
It's the dumbest shit I have ever heard and its standard operating procedure. Even worse is it is the plan in an industry where the average consumer has the attention span of a mayfly. Companies need to hire armies of programmers and engineers just to make that kind of functionality. Millions upon millions spent on manpower knowing the diminishing returns ain't gonna keep the lights on.
This is mass madness perpetrated on a global industry level all because a group of man-children decided that video games are a service, not a product and that a game should never die of old age. So yeah, the apple will always look plump and juicy in the garden of knowledge and all the time in the world means nothing to a people of finite empathy and infinite greed.
Anyway, Hyperspace Outlaw is good, you should check it out.
