Issue : Games : Dendrochronology

We. The Revolution is a game about Les Miserables.

There is a saying in the Navy, "Big ships move slow." Seems like a no-duh thing when you first hear it. Big ships move slow, that's just physics.

First time I heard it I was an E-nothing squid on my first deployment. My chief and I were out on the smoking sponson after sweepers and I was complaining about getting some random paint chit passed so I could do a bulkhead. The man said, "Big ships move slow." flicked his butt overboard into the ocean, slapped me on the back of the head, and left.

I legit didn't get what he meant. I was like, "The fuck how a ship move got to do with me gettin' a bucket of paint?" Young people are clinically dumb because they spend so much time convinced other people are dumb based on listening to what the person said instead of considering what a person is trying to help them understand.

A video game company is a ship subject to the same rules as any other ship. Problem is the people charting courses have got fucked up maps. For instance, shareholders want to know how a company is gonna be making money five years from now. The executive branch of the company has to create "forecasts."

These forecasts are a combination of what the company is working on today, which they decided to work on based on what is popular today, using human assets that they have today (Programmers, Designers, Artists, Production), and sales numbers based on how many people are buying a version of the thing they plan to make tomorrow, today.

How successful do you think a Battle Royale game will be five years from now? How about an MMO? How about a MOBA? Outside of the executive team, how many human assets do you think will still be working at that company that can make a quality game of the genre in five years given the exponential industry turnover rate? How many people are gonna want to buy into another Battle Royale game, even if it's free?

Big ships move slow.

The quickest way from point A to point B is a straight line. That is objectively true. It's very easy to ignore all of the shit in between point A and point B whose names are either "Rock" or "Hard-Place" depending on the time of day.

The video game industry is headed full steam toward an iceberg, and game companies are still spending way too much time convinced other people are dumb. The sad part is those other people work for them and are their customers. Dinosaurs and meteors.

Anyway, shouts to info, yeah that's whatsup. Thank you for the well wishes but if you run that Beyonce meme one more fuckin' time imma ask them to fast track article 13 on everything. Rip TB rip TC rip Tall-T. Love is doing something about it, hate is talking about it. Get out there and do all the great things, we believe in you, you got this. Also Jobs.
